I said "and variations" because there are so many different ways to slightly tweak things. There's a very good book in our library called _A New Kind of Science_ by Stephen Wolfram which is an awesome resource for anyone interested in creating some software that can "grow" patterns. http://www.wolframscience.com/ for the online site related to the book. This is potentially a very good collaborative project. With some thought, we could together create an API (that's ApplicationProgrammerInterface? ) so that perhaps all sorts of "raw materials" could be fed to our program(s) to see if we can find even more "fractally rich" sorts of results like Wolfram talks about in the book.
